What is Xiangqi (Chinese Chess)?

Game Board and Pieces

Chessboard: 9 vertical pnes × 10 horizontal pnes with 90 intersections. The center has the "Chu River and Han Border."

Pieces: 16 red + 16 black = 32 total. Each side has: 1 General, 2 Advisors, 2 Elephants, 2 Horses, 2 Rooks, 2 Cannons, 5 Soldiers.

How Each Piece Moves

General: Moves one square at a time within the 3×3 palace area.

Advisor (Scholar): Diagonal moves within the palace only.

Elephant: Diagonal two-step moves; cannot cross the river.

Horse: L-shape move; blocked if “horse leg” is occupied.

Rook: Any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

Cannon: Same as rook, but must jump over one piece to capture.

Soldier: Moves forward only before crossing river; can go sideways after crossing.

How to Win in Xiangqi

Checkmate: Trap the enemy General with no legal moves.

Stalemate: Block all opposing moves while keeping your General safe.

Draw: When no player can achieve checkmate.
